Spread the love

It is no secret by now that I am a huge book lover & it is my mission to read as many books as I can before Baby C #2 makes their appearance! I thought I would share 5 books i’ve read recently, ranging from thrillers to smut. You know I used to be embarrassed about reading/liking smutty books but fuck it, life is too short. MY NAME IS RACHAEL & I LIKE BOOK PORN. I will share a brief synopsis of each book, plus my thoughts (non-spoiler) & my star rating.

What if your life was built on a lie?

When lawyer Lily marries Ed, she’s determined to make a fresh start. To leave the secrets of the past behind. But when she takes on her first criminal case, she starts to find herself strangely drawn to her client. A man who’s accused of murder. A man she will soon be willing to risk everything for.

But is he really innocent? And who is she to judge?

There was so much hype surounding this book when it came out and I tried listening to it via audiobook a few months ago but I was just not grasping the story due to chapters switching between characters, so last month I decided to read it on my kindle instead and it was much easier! The plot of this was really intriguing & it really captured my attention; it was well thought out & I can understand why people loved it. However I found it slightly far-fetched, none of the characters were likeable at all & I also feel like the story/timeline was dragged out a little too much. It could have been much shorter. I gave it 3 stars!

“We were perfect together. Until we met.”

I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever… And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch. Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever. Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

I love Penelope Douglas’s books, they aren’t ground breaking literature! However they are the perfect easy, smutty & heart-wrenching books. You can’t help but fall in love with the characters. I loved the dual perspective aspect and how you watched the relationship really develop, it was a slow-burn done really well. I gave this 4 stars!

“She’s a total stranger. But she knows who you are…Suzi did a bad thing. She’s paying for it now, pregnant, scared, and living in an isolated cottage with her jealous husband, Nick. When Nora moves into the only house nearby, Suzi is delighted to have a friend. So much so that she’s almost tempted to tell Nora her terrible secret. But there’s more to Nora than meets the eye. It’s impossible—does she already know what Suzi did?Meanwhile, Elle spends her days in her perfect home, fixated on keeping up appearances. But when her husband betrays her, it unravels a secret going all the way back to her childhood. She’ll do whatever it takes to hold on to him, even if that means murder. After all, she’s done it before…Caught up in their own secrets and lies, these strangers will soon realise they have more in common than they could ever have imagined. When a shocking event brings them together, their lives will never be the same again.”

A fast paced thriller that had me hooked from the first couple of chapters! I really liked the dual perspectives although found the fact that sometimes the timeline changed, slightly confusing, especially when it was switching to the past but it was easy to figure out within a few sentences. The characters, all though unlikeable were all really compelling and fantastically written!
I found some moments where very convenient or hard to believe but once you looked past that, the story was really enjoyable. Amazing twists that kept you guessing although there was one plot point that I guessed pretty much straight away, the other twists were enough to keep me surprised & well written. I gave this 4 stars!

“Please don’t leave me because of one stupid mistake.

I love you too much for this to change everything.” Avery & Luke are solid. The love they have is the envy of their friends. So when he joins her at university, she is pretty sure that life can’t get any better. But something is changing and when Avery makes a new friend in the brilliant writer Beckett, she starts to see a new side of the man she loves. A side that scares her. As their relationship begins to spiral, she is faced with a life-changing decision. Should she fight for her boyfriend? Or fight for herself?”

I actually wrote a full in-depth blog review that you can read here. But I will say I loved this book, as much as it was heart breaking & hard to read at times, it is such an important book that I urge everyone to read! I gave it 4 stars!

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go. He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.

He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.  I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable. Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one. I am.

I took her in, because I thought I was helping. She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement. As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me. But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight. And her boyfriend’s father. Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

I am going to start by saying that the synopsis of this book does NOT do it justice. It makes it sound like something seedy & cliché, however it is 100% NOT! I thought it would make for uncomfortable reading but you really understand the circumstances surrounding the characters and as relationships develop. The author does an incredible job of handling a sensitive subject & told the story in a really respectable way. The chemistry is AMAZING between the two main characters & I loved them both. I gave this 4 stars! It is available to read on KINDLE UNLIMITED.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these books. I like the sound of a couple of them. I’ll add them to my ‘To Read’ list – it is already about half a mile long right enough. 😊
